One in two people with a disability is likely to face violence, abuse or neglect in their lifetime. Our current National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), catering to over half a million people, does little to defend this demographic.

Our support workers are not taught to screen for this violence, nor does our system effectively filter out these abusers.

Therefore, The Real Care Initiative (TRCI) is petitioning to request the strengthening of the NDIS Workers Screening Check to include mandatory onboarding processes and psychological evaluations for all NDIS workers.

THE NDIS SCREENING SERVICE FAILS ITS PURPOSE

The NDIS workers screening check is designed to assess whether a potential support worker is a risk to the safety of a person with a disability under their care.

This assessment is primarily, if not entirely, composed of criminal background checks. Blocking out all past offenders.

Yet this system forgets that only 40% of abuse is reported and 44.3% of perpetrators re-offend on average. Therefore our screening systems are approx. 17.7% effective.

The logo of The Real Care Initiative was designed by John, an individual with ASD, OCD and a Learning Disability, who receives support up to five days a week.

For John, the drawing of the wolf symbolises "caring for others" while the dragon represents "justice". He chose the colours blue and red "because it's like Optimus Prime and Superman's suit" which are embodiments of "hope and leadership".
